On paper, that's not a dream team. That's a roster your fantasy league would laugh at. And yet this exact five-person mashup just walked off with a royal trophy presented in the name of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and they did it representing Chulalongkorn University under the banner "Team Jernae."
Their arena wasn't turf or hardwood. It was the "Huk Mae Hackathon: Carrying Forward the Legacy of the Mother of the Land, Toward a Community Economy," a national innovation competition organized by Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, together with Krungthai Bank and a roster of public and private partners. The whole event was built to honor the legacy of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, by turning royal ideals about grassroots development into something students could actually build and pitch.
This wasn't some scrappy weekend jam session, either. A staggering 126 teams from universities across the country signed up, which is a bigger field than most professional leagues field in a single conference. Every one of those teams spent more than three months in incubation, refining pitches and getting grilled by mentors, before the strongest survivors were invited to stand on the Demo Day stage at a seminar room inside Thailand's Parliament building on July 24. Three months without an off week. If that's not preseason training, nothing is.
What Team Jernae rolled out for the judges was called "Up Found," an AI-powered lost-and-found management system built for airports, using CCTV-based detection and tracking to help staff locate missing luggage and belongings faster and more accurately. It sounds like a small, unglamorous problem until you've been the person standing at a baggage carousel, watching it spin empty, feeling your whole trip start to unravel in real time. Up Found was designed to shrink that nightmare down to a manageable inconvenience, tightening service standards, security protocols, and the overall passenger experience in one system.
Here's the part of the story that makes it more interesting than your average hackathon writeup: who was actually in the room. Thapakorn Suwannapho, from computer engineering, ran point on the core code. Natchapol Phurimongkol, from electrical engineering, handled the sensor architecture that fed the system its data. Napat Khamnurak, from civil engineering, thought through the installation logistics — how you actually retrofit an airport terminal with this kind of tech without shutting the place down. Tatpong Prommanok, from industrial engineering, mapped out the operational workflow so the whole thing could function under real-world pressure. And Wichit Khamphaeng, from the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, took all of that engineering ambition and translated it into a business model that could survive being questioned by a judging panel who'd seen 125 other pitches that week. Five people, five technical dialects, and only a few weeks to learn how to actually understand each other. Anyone who's ever tried to get engineers and business majors to agree on a single Google Slide knows that's harder than it sounds.
On July 24, that seminar room inside the Parliament building carried the particular tension reserved for people waiting on exam results. Senate President Mongkol Surasajja presided over the ceremony before the announcement came down: Team Jernae, champions, and the recipients of a trophy that every one of those 126 teams had spent months dreaming about. Runner-up honors went to a team called "Phuea Mae Phae Bor Dai" from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, who paired satellite data with AI to support sustainable fishing communities. Thailand's hackathon scene, it's safe to say, is not exactly playing small ball this year.
Every championship team has somebody standing on the sideline calling the plays, and Jernae was no exception. Three faculty advisors spent the better part of three months in their corner: Professor Dr. Wittit Pansuk and Assistant Professor Dr. Manop Kaewmoracharoen, both from civil engineering, who kept an eye on structural feasibility and real-world usability, and Associate Professor Dr. Proadpran Punyabukkana, from computer engineering, who helped sharpen the pitch until it could stand up to a judging panel without flinching. That kind of coaching rarely makes the highlight reel, but no team lifts a trophy without someone willing to burn an entire semester listening to half-formed ideas.
There's a bigger lesson buried in all of this, and it has nothing to do with code. Team Jernae didn't win because one genius carried four passengers. They won because five strangers from five different departments agreed to actually listen to each other, adapted to a problem none of them had faced before, and then trained hard for three months without anyone calling in sick. That's the exact same formula elite athletes swear by. The only difference here is the field was a conference room instead of a pitch, and the trophy came from the Royal Family instead of FIFA.
That royal trophy will probably end up sitting in a display case somewhere in the Department of Computer Engineering at Chulalongkorn, gathering compliments and dust in roughly equal measure. But its real value was never about the shine. It's the reminder that world-changing ideas don't require a single brilliant mind working alone in a garage. Sometimes they come from five people willing to cross department lines, argue past their comfort zones, and burn three months solving a problem everybody else had simply learned to live with.
And if there's one more thing worth remembering from Demo Day, it's the image of engineering students — the kind usually most comfortable coding alone at 2 a.m. — forced to sit and actually absorb a business-model lecture from their teammate in accounting, then go rewrite half their system overnight because of it. That, more than any algorithm, was the real hackathon. It's also exactly why this trophy belongs to the team that adapted the hardest, not simply the team that was, on paper, the most talented.
